drive thru the geographical center of north america. high-line too loud to hear the heartbeat but listen anyway. slept wrong on my neck. gave away my glasses. fucked up. fixed it. fucked up again. fixed it again. powerlines criss-cross above stubborn sunflowers along the highway, across stagnant water and flickering flatland. i circle back to the mistakes. the cattle who people these fields. i am cowed. limp spastic, frenetic, kinetic back to horsecapture camp. kneel by my father. tell him of my clumsiness, the way i ruin everything. how i try to change it when i do. he stopped smoking years ago. it’s my turn to cauterize my lungs shut. he hands me a lighter.
